"What if I buy insurance and then can't claim?" is among the top worries of anyone considering it. In reality most claim refusals have explicable causes, and many can be prevented from the outset. Here are the common ones.

1. The event occurred during the waiting period

An illness arising before the policy's waiting period has passed is not yet covered. The prevention is knowing the waiting period of the plan you bought, and timing any change of policy so there is no gap.

2. A condition or symptom existing before the insurance

A condition already present before applying is generally not covered, particularly when it was not declared on the application. This connects directly to the next cause.

3. An incomplete health declaration

If the company later finds that material information was concealed, it may exercise its right to avoid the contract and refuse the claim under the conditions of the law. The simplest prevention is to answer every question on the application truthfully.

4. The event falls within the policy's exclusions

Every policy has an exclusions section — treatment that is not medically necessary, or events arising from certain risk behaviours. Reading the exclusions before buying keeps your expectations in line with reality.

5. Incomplete documents, or submitting late

Some cases are not about the cover conditions at all but about the process — a medical certificate not stating the necessary information, or documents submitted after the specified period. The prevention is contacting the company or your agent as soon as something happens, so you know the list of documents and the time frame from the start.

What to do if you disagree with the decision

The insured has the right to ask for a written explanation, to appeal the decision with the company, and, if it is still unresolved, to complain to the OIC, the regulator of the insurance business.

In short

A smooth claim starts on the day you apply: declare truthfully, read the conditions and exclusions, know the waiting period, and keep the documents ready. And having someone to help coordinate at claim time makes the process easier still.
