Chiang Mai is the medical hub of northern Thailand — for local residents, for people who have moved here to work, and for visitors. Keeping the phone numbers and addresses of the main hospitals on your phone makes decisions much faster on the day of an emergency, or when you need to plan how to use your insurance. Calling to check your entitlement before travelling in particular saves both time and unnecessary expense.

Main hospitals in Chiang Mai

Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital (Suan Dok) — public

Nakornping Hospital — public

Chiang Mai Ram Hospital — private

Chiangmai Klaimor Hospital — private

Notes for policyholders

  • Before travelling, call the hospital and your insurer to check which entitlement you can use. Notifying them, or arranging a fax claim in advance, makes things much faster at the counter.
  • Public hospitals generally accept universal coverage and social security entitlements under each scheme's conditions. Holders of private health insurance should ask their own company in advance about the conditions and the list of network hospitals — particularly the private hospital they intend to use.
  • Carry your ID card, your insurance card (if you have one) and a list of your regular medication every time. It makes both the treatment and the claim smoother.

Note: addresses and phone numbers can change. Please call the hospital to confirm before travelling, and contact them by phone or through their Facebook page directly, as public hospitals often do not reply by email.

Plan ahead rather than hunting for a number in an emergency

Chiang Mai has a wide choice of hospitals, public and private. The recommendation is to choose the family's main hospital in advance — one, according to your entitlement and budget — and save the number in your favourites. In a critical emergency you may go to the nearest hospital under the UCEP policy, and 1669 can be called for emergency assistance 24 hours a day.
